The classic Disney Snow White & Seven Dwarfs is in for a live-action! However, after the success of The Little Mermaid’s live-action, fans aren’t much convinced about this new Disney remake.
Based on the Snow White original film, this live-action was in production since 2016. However, it was only until 2021, that the production took full swing. However, the Disney Snow White controversy was triggered only after Disney announced its casting.
Snow White Controversy: Questionable Casting?
The online trolling and displeasure started once Disney announced Rachel Zegler as the casting for Snow White. Fans weren’t quite smitten about the fact that a Latina woman landed the role of Disney Snow White. While other critics were more centered on how the movie would handle titular dwarves.
On Marc Maron’s “WTF” podcast, Peter Dinklage, who has a form of dwarfism, stated that making a movie on dwarves who are still living in a shabby cage together makes no sense to them, especially in an age where everything has progressed.
However, despite the internet critics about her casting, Zegler seems pretty proud of having landed this role. In a recent interview, she stated, “Never in a million years I thought I would get such a role.” The actress also fought back some of the comments through a tweet. The tweet was towards the people who defended her from such racial comments. In the tweet, she stated, “While she is happy to have people defend her, she would not like to be tagged in any nonsense discourse about her casting.” Landing the role of Snow White has been her dream, and she will not let such racial comments get to her.
The Dwarves Controversy
Another set of lashing comments came when Dinklage was one of the first public figures to point this out. Allegedly, Disney did manage to cast a Latino actress for the role of Snow White but made absolutely no efforts to show progressiveness, when it comes to dwarves.
In response to such allegations, Disney said that their approach towards depicting dwarves would be different. However, in the initial set of photos, several critics stated that the actors who played dwarves didn’t have dwarfism. Some racial comments also included that the dwarves also had black men and women in the released photographs. However, Disney later replied that these photos weren’t real and were faked.
Gal Gadot’s Controversy- Snow White Original Remake
Soon to be added to the new movies to stream list, the Disney Snow White controversy escalated when Zegler, who is playing Snow White stated that this movie would be different from the Snow White Original Film. She stated that the cartoon is 85 years old, and this new adaptation is not going to be about a young woman waiting for her prince charming to rescue her.
While this might seem like a modern and spectacular concept, several critics further questioned Disney’s questionable casting choice, after casting an actor who supposedly isn’t too fond of her own character.
