On March 28, 2025, Friday, central Myanmar was hit by a massive 7.7 magnitude earthquake that caused wreak and havoc among citizens. With a 7.7 earthquake and a 6.4 magnitude aftershock that followed 12 minutes later, several sources suggested that Myanmar wasn’t just ready to deal with such a huge-scale disaster.
One person was killed, and 50 were injured after a high-rise building collapsed following the earthquake today, according to reports.
The point is, earthquakes can be unpredictable. While it is absolutely impossible to predict a quake, you can always be ready before, during after the shocks are felt. And, with Bangkok, the capital of Thailand, under a national emergency following this massive quake, here are our learnings on how to stay safe when the ground shakes.
Prepping Up Before An Earthquake
Let’s admit it, Earthquakes are quite different than thunderstorms or cyclones. While all can cause some serious damage, earthquakes aren’t predictable.
This is why it is vital to be prepared especially if you live in an earthquake-prone zone. Here are some ways you can make your own home a safe place before an earthquake strikes:
Secure all Heavy Furniture
After the 1994 Northridge earthquake, over 50% of injuries were caused due to toppling objects. So, to make sure you are safe from a future earthquake, make sure to look around your home and identify objects that can topple over. This can include heavy pieces of furniture and even appliances, like sofas, TVs, lights, etc. You can secure this furniture or appliances carefully into the wall so they don’t come off during a quake. Also note that heavy, large, or unstable items should always be placed on a bit of a lower ground or close to the floor. They should also be away from doors or escape routes.
Know Your Safe Spots
You may never know when an earthquake could strike, but you should always know your safe spots. Identify sturdy desks or tables that you can take cover under during a quake. And, if you live in an earthquake-prone area, you can conduct drills.
Construct a Plan
make sure to keep all your family in the loop when it comes to prepping up before an earthquake. They should all know about safe spots, escape routes, and what to do when the disaster strikes.
Gather Necessary Supplies
A lot of things could go wrong after an earthquake. This is why you need to be equipped with all the essentials. So, make sure your home, car, and workplace have all the essentials. You can start by having first aid kits, water, some sturdy shoes, a portable radio, snacks, and emergency cash. You can get a well-maintained checklist here.
Safest Steps During Tremors
The way to keep yourself safe during an earthquake depends upon where you are. However, the primary step is always to remain calm and don’t give in to panic.
Indoors Safety Steps
If you are inside your home or office, take cover under a sturdy desk, or table as soon as you start feeling the tremors. Also, while waiting for the tremors out under the table, cover your head and neck with one arm and place your other hand on the floor for extra support. If you are in a wheelchair or someone you know is, lck the wheels and remain seated until the tremors subside.
Stay away from fireplaces, windows, and heavy appliances. Also, do not take elevators. Plus, if you are in bed when the earthquake strikes, do not get out of it. Lie face down to protect all vital organs and cover your head and neck with a fluffy pillow.
Outdoor Safety Steps
If you are outdoors, stride towards open ground. You should be away from buildings, trees, power cables, and anything that can topple over. If you are driving, pull over and stop or simply stay inside your car until the shaking stops. However do not stop under bridges, trees, or anything that could strike your vehicle. If you are in the mountains, stay mindful of falling rocks. And, if you are near the seaside or oceanside, check out any warnings for tsunamis as soon as possible.
Seeking Assistance After An Earthquake
Once the shaking subsides, make sure you and all those around you are okay. Plus, also note the following things:
Do a Safety Check
As soon as the earthquake stops, run toward an open ground, regardless of whether you are indoors or outdoors. Once you are in a safe place, check yourself and others for any injury, or call for help if you need it. In the safe place, look around for any items that could threaten your safety. This could be glass shatters, gas leaks, cables, or fire. Wear sturdy boots to protect your feet from broken glass or objects. If you are stuck inside debris, cover your eyes, mouth, and nose with your hands. Make sure to send a text or make noise to divert help.

Be Prepared for Aftershocks
It is highly likely that aftershocks can hit your region again, in a few minutes. And, based on multiple records, aftershocks are known to be stronger than actual earthquakes. So, make sure you are in a safe place.
Stay Connected
get in touch with your family members, in case they are not with you. Also, make sure you keep your radion handy to listen to all recent updates. This would also help you find your nearest shelters.
