Overlord is a classic isekai anime where the main character gets sucked into the video game world. It has all the action, intense story lines, and classic character chemistry. But is Overlord good? Read this blog to explore our honest review of the Overlord anime.
The storyline starts with the protagonist playing his favorite MMORPG game and logging off for the night, like always. However, when he wakes up the next day, he realizes he never really logged out. Instead, he is sucked into the video game world, where all MPCs are acting like actual people, and the guild building you once explored in the game is a fortress.
Unlike other classic anime, this one doesn’t start with a hero or the chosen one. Instead, we get a skeleton-faced mage, called Ainz Ooal Gown. What makes it different is that it is unlike the usual “game world becomes real” trope. In fact, it involves a gamer’s logic, while making all the consequences real.
FYI- you don’t get extra lives or spawn ability here.
What is Overlord anime about? This is exactly what we will explore in our next section.
What Is Overlord Anime About?
Overlord is a world where a simple video game, that is being shut down forever, turns into a reality. The story follows a famous MMORPG game called Yggdrasil, which is closing forever. But, instead of getting kicked out at the shutdown time, the main character stays inside the gameworld, only to realize it is the new reality.

We are soon introduced to the protagonist Momonga, who soon realizes that the NPCs are actually acting like real humans who have emotions. Soon, he realizes that he is not stuck in a simulation, but is transported to a new world with no visible way of return.
After accepting his fate, Momonga begins calling himself Ainz Ooal Gown, the skeletal Sorcerer King. Transported with great capabilities, we make the Great Tomb of Nazarick his fort and learn to test his new abilities. The reaction of now-human NPCs is often associated with fear or confusion. The storyline eventually shifts towards kingdom conflicts, political negotiations, religious factions, territorial battles, and human-monster conflicts.
Eventually, we see Ainz let go of his human self and try to upload the new expectations his people have of him. Rated as one of the best from our Isekai anime list, this anime is full of action, interesting storylines, and different arcs.
Overlord as Best Isekai Anime?- What To Like About Overlord?
This isekai anime is different than others. In most anime, we see a hero’s progress as a leader. Here, he is already a very powerful leader. So, instead of the usual storyline where the protagonist accepts his powers, learns them, and masters them, Ainz starts out as massively overpowered. The storyline mostly focuses on strategy and consequences. This change of perspective is rather a new thing, and most viewers may enjoy it.
Another thing we love about the Overlord anime is how Nazarick is built. Everything from the characters, fort, and even structure feels detailed and has personality. The guardians have their own personalities and a backstory, with proper character development.
Moreover, the other worlds are also not just fillers. While Nazarick is very properly built, the other empires, kingdoms, and arc are also very properly detailed. The overall storyline of this Isekai anime is also very dark, which we absolutely love.
The tone is dark, but it isn’t gloomy. You get action but also humor. There are also a lot of characters with proper development and storylines, making the plot interesting. You can also explore the best anime, available on Crunchyroll, here.
What We Don’t Like About Overlord?
As much as we enjoy it, there are a few things anime could have done better.
To start with, the power is one-sided. Meaning, the protagonist is massively overpowered. So, while this may seem pretty interesting in the start, the user may tend to lose all interest knowing he would defeat just any enemy out there.

You may also feel a slowdown in some seasons. This is particularly because of extended worldbuilding, where every detail, like a character you don’t even know or has no relevance, is explained in great detail.
Another point we don’t like is the way Ainz disconnects with his human self completely. While the anime plot constantly reshapes him, he does not show much human emotion, making the users lose relatability.
